DAVID HOUGHTON
GRAPHIC DESIGN
When I'm not taking photographs I work as a graphic designer specialising in magazine design and publishing.
I trained as a graphic designer at Isle College, Wisbech, and then at Buckinghamshire College, Amersham. I graduated in 1990 and started work for local design agency Bene Imprimatur. After a 18 months I took a job working in the artroom of Music Maker Publications in Ely. There I worked on a range of music titles including, Guitarist, Music Technology, Rhythm and Hip-Hop Connection.
In the spring of 1994 I joined business contract publishers Cornhill Publications, where I art directed the Hilton Guest and Debrett's International Collection magazines. After the company relocated to London, I left to pursue a freelance career.
While freelance I worked for Future Publishing, Art Directing Hip-Hop Connection, and EMAP publications where I worked on the football titles, MATCH and Big Shots. I also designed and art directed the MATCH Euro 2000 special. My other main client at the time was Sanctuary Publishing, where I was responsible for designing and art directing all its in-house music titles and promotional materials. Books I worked on included biographies on Serge Gainsbourg, Elvis Costello, Iron Maiden, Roy Orbison and Jackie Wilson.
At the beginning of 2002 I took the role of Senior Designer at Cambridge Publishers Limited, where I'm still currently employed. I art direct over 100 publishing episodes a year. These range from contract business magazines, science publications and once again, Hip-Hop Connection. Through CPL I have had the chance to work with freelance editor and author Chris Hunt on the Match of the Day Annual, and World Cup Stories, The history of the World Cup for the BBC, plus The official Wayne Rooney Annual 2007 for Harper Collins.
I still occasionally freelance in my own time, mainly as one half of 'Mile Away Club Productions' with Chris Hunt. Together we have designed and produced The Complete Book of Football Encyclopaedia. I have also designed several CD sleeves for the band Rinaldi Sings, and currently produce the maps for Tourist Tracks, for their MP3 walking tours.
